A Mass of Christian burial for Mr. Julius James Gregoire, 74, will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, December 15, 2023, at Saint Edward Roman Catholic Church, 175 Ambassador W. Lemelle Drive, with Fr. Donald Bernard, celebrant, officiating.

Entombment will follow in the Mausoleum of Nativity of Our Lady Catholic Church Cemetery, 130 N. Richelieu Circle in New Iberia.

A visitation will be held at Fletcher Funeral Home from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Friday, December 15, 2023. A Rosary will be recited at 10 a.m.

Julius transitioned from labor to reward at 11:40 p.m. on Thursday, December 7, 2023, at Camelot Rehabilitation at Magnolia Park in Lafayette.

Born on October 31, 1949, Julius was a devout Catholic who was a parishioner at St. Edward Roman Catholic Church. Julius was a member of the Knights of Peter Claver Council #63. He was a graduate of Jonas Henderson High School Class of 1967. Furthering his education, he attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now UL) and received a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. While attending the University he became a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Julius was the first African American juvenile detective for the City of New Iberia Police Department. After retirement in the oilfield industry he was employed as an Operator for the City of New Iberia. 

Left to cherish his memory include his devoted wife of 50 years Katherine G. Gregoire of New Iberia; two daughters, Christela Patrice Gregoire Spurlock (Jarrot) of Broussard and Laura Lynn Broussard of Broussard; stepson Dwayne Granger; two grandchildren, Jordan Christopher Spurlock and Jayde Carrington Spurlock; godchild Linda Washington of New Iberia; special niece whom he loved as a daughter Pedra Gregoire Randolph of New Orleans; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Emile Gregoire and Rozena Jackson Gregoire; brothers Leo Gregoire Sr. and Emile Gregoire III; sisters Leotha Gregoire, Antoinette Gregoire and Judy Gregoire; and goddaughter Veronica Lynn Polk Duhon.

Active pallbearers are Murray Jackson, Austin Randolph, Michael Spencer, Jordan Spurlock, Leo Gregoire Jr. and Eugene Jackson.

Honorary pallbearers are Jarrot Spurlock, Russell Polk Jr., Lawrence Rochelle, Mario Sowell, Kevin Jackson, Kenneth Gregoire, Robert Gregoire, Warren “Nickey” Gregoire Jr., Michael Gregoire, Karl Jackson and the Knights of Peter Claver Council #63.
