Marcus Hayes founded Trek Security in 2018 to offer professional and effective security services across Louisiana.

Trek Security provides both armed and unarmed protection for everything from oil rigs to department stores in cities across Louisiana, including Lafayette, Broussard, Youngsville, New Iberia, Lake Charles, Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

Owner Marcus Hayes essentially runs the company on his own: managing finances, finding jobs and hiring personnel. While this has put a strain on Hayes himself, it allows him to trust that things are being done properly.

The security guards don’t have arrest authority, yet they do have the authority to detain someone until the police arrive. According to Hayes, this is actually similar to how police officers assigned to a specific location should act. Because they are assigned to a post, they can certainly detain someone, but they can’t leave the post to bring them in. There are a few differences, however.

“For insurance purposes, we try not to touch anyone, it’s more of a deterrent really,” Hayes said.

Insurance plays a major role in the business. To start the business, Hayes acquired a $2 million insurance policy.

Previously, New Orleans provided the most clientele traffic, but maintaining steady and effective operations there proved a challenge. The business is based in New Iberia, so providing effective oversight and management in New Orleans caused friction with the guards. Guards work where they live, so Hayes hires guards in Baton Rouge, Lake Charles and New Orleans.

This idea extends to supervisors as well, which makes it difficult to ensure services remain up to their standards. Sending men out to perform jobs in New Orleans proves equally difficult, because it is so far from home.

All of his security guards must be certified through the state of Louisiana, first in unarmed security, and second in armed security. Hayes primarily hires former police and military personnel, but they must meet his standards. He is particular about those he hires as he previously served in law enforcement as a Sheriff’s deputy.

“I try to get people that present themselves out in public professionally and look the part of security. It’s tough when you’ve got a lot of guys that don’t even look like security just walking around in uniforms,” Hayes said.

Currently, their most served areas are hotels and housing in Lafayette, including the Fairfield Inn, the Holiday Inn North and the Lafayette Housing Authority. Another primary client is the Ashley Stewart clothing store in Baton Rouge.

They also contract with major national chains such as Dollar General and Dick’s Sporting Goods through a third party which itself holds contracts with these companies.

Hayes plans to continue expanding his business, possibly pushing north into Alexandria and is looking for ways to effectively manage the business as it grows.
