Lake Fausse Pointe’s bass are sure to get the attention of fishermen across Acadiana in three major tournaments that kick off competitive bass fishing for 2023.

The date for the second big tournament, the Legends on the Lake, was announced Jan. 24 by the Sunset-based Atchafalaya Bass Club Hawg Hunters as March 2, a Saturday, out of Marsh Field Landing near Loreauville. Thirty-two boats fished the event last year.

The Legends tournament follows the annual season opener, the Louisiana Bass Cats Invitational Fishing scheduled to be held Feb. 18, a Sunday, out of Fairfax Foster Bailey Landing, Franklin. Open participants will scatter to all points of the compass, depending on weather and water conditions, in search of keeper bass but over the years many of them point the bow of their bass boat to Lake Fausse Pointe.

The granddaddy tournament of them all is the Jackie Savoy Memorial Big Bass Classic. This year it’s scheduled to be held April 27 at Marsh Field Landing, where food booths and musicians will feed and entertain the crowd as well as the bass anglers who participate in the fundraiser for Lydia Cancer Society and Acadiana Hope for a Cause, among other non-profits.

Tee Roy Savoy of Coteau Holmes, Jackie Savoy Memorial BBC director, announced the date for this year’s big event on Jan. 6. He’s hopeful of getting more boats, more cooking teams and more bands.

The tournament features hourly payoffs for the three-biggest bass plus the biggest five-bass limit. Entry fee is $150 per boat.

“You can be just an everyday angler-type bass fisherman and win this thing. It’s luck. You just have to be in the right place at the right time” to catch the biggest bass of the day, Savoy said Jan. 22.

First up on the calendar, however, is the 19th annual Louisiana Bass Cats Invitational Fishing with $1,000 guaranteed for the team with the heaviest limit on Feb. 18.

Last year’s LBC winner was the team of Mike Sinitiere and Mike O’Brien, who got a great start with the latter’s 7.13-pound bass on his third cast of the day. That “hawg” anchored a 15.98-pound stringer worth $1,520, including the big bass pot.

It was the winners’ second straight victory in what also is known as the Louisiana Bass Cats Open. Thirty-three boats fished the tournament in 2023 when it was held out of Marsh Field Landing.

Entry fee is $100 per boat with an optional $10 for the big bass pot. For more information call Max Stevens at 281-5018.

Four of the last five winning Legends teams hail from the Teche Area. Recent winners of the Legends on the Lake plaques include James Fredieu and his son, Brodie Fredieu in 2023; Braxton Resweber and Austin Theriot in 2022; Bo Amy and Raven Owen in 2021, and Sinitiere and O’Brien in 2019. All are bass anglers who live in the area.

The streak of area winners was interrupted once in 2020 by Carencro Bass Club members Drake Menard and Chris Mouton.

Who from the area will step up this year to become Legends on the Lake?

Entry fee for the tournament is $100 per boat. For more information call 337-501-3539.
