- Kassidy Scott said she considers the fire department to be like a second family.
Capt. Kassidy Scott of the Iberia Parish Fire District always wanted to be a first responder.
Getting her start with Acadian Ambulance before transitioning to become a firefighter, Scott, 29, said that there were quite a few similarities between the two services.
Graduating from Catholic High School in 2013, Scott began work for Acadian after attending school to become an emergency medical technician and has been working for the IPFD for eight years.
What made you want to pursue a career as a first responder?
What made me want to pursue a career as a first responder was in high school I went on a ride along wth Acadian Ambulance, after high school I went to EMT school and worked for Acadian after that then joined the fire service.
What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part about my job is never knowing what kind of call we are about to go on and having to make decisions based on what we see first hand. Also helping the community is a big part of why I do what I do, it is a very rewarding job.
What is the hardest part?
The hardest part of my job is having to make those tough decisions when they come up. Some of the decisions having to be made on calls can be difficult to make.
Would you recommend your career to others?
I would recommend this career to someone. This career is very rewarding and is very fulfilling.
What is something about your job that most people don’t know?
Well, I would say one thing about our job that most people do not know is that we run all the emergency medical calls with Acadian Ambulance. So a lot of the times when someone calls 911 we are arriving first on scene no matter what the call is.
What is your favorite or longest-lasting memory from your time as a first responder?
My longest-lasting memories happen at the fire house, working alongside your peers and friends would have to be some of the best memories I have in the service. We are a big family, we cook together, hang out together and when the time comes, we run life-saving calls together. I couldn’t ask for a better group of people to do all those with.
Is there anything else that you’d like to tell our readers about your job or experiences?
The job itself is the greatest job in the world, it gives you things that not everyone gets to experience in life. It isn’t just a job it is a family that we spend 24 hours with every 3rd day. So 10 days out of each month we are at the fire house with our second family.
