- Alderman Butch Bourgeois reviews a law enforcement agreement between the Jeanerette Police Department and Jeanerette City Marshal's Office that was approved during Monday's meeting.
The Jeanerette Board of Aldermen voted to enroll in CivicSource for local tax services at Monday’s board meeting.
Mayor Carol Bourgeois Jr. said a presentation from a former tax collector was made to the administration in order to gauge the usefulness of CivicSource, and it was found the city would benefit from the services.
“We’re outsourcing the pushing of our tax services to CivicSource,” Bourgeois said.
Clerk Susan Colden said CivicSource will primarily be dealing with residents who have not paid their taxes past December, and Jeanerette residents will still be able to pay their taxes at Jeanerette Town Hall.
“This will primarily be handling the people who don’t pay taxes by the end of December, they’ll handle the backend,” Colden said. “That part is so critical and the laws change all the time, to keep it up with it all we just don’t have the staff and the knowledge to stay up to date on everything.”
Colden added that most municipalities use CivicSource for similar purposes, and Jeanerette was one of the few towns that worked through tax processing without the tool.
In other business, the board unanimously voted on an agreement between the Jeanerette Police Department and Jeanerette City Marshal’s Office for the rendering of aid to the JPD.
The agenda item has seen several special meetings over the past several weeks. Talks began for the City Marshal’s Office to give additional aid to the Jeanerette Police Department due to an officer shortage.
The agreement will be renewed on a monthly basis, and Mayor Pro Tem Tia Simmons added an amendment for the marshal and chief of police to the mayor and board, rather than just the mayor.
Updates will be provided at every Board of Aldermen meeting until the contract terminates under the stipulations of the contract approved at the meeting.
The board unanimously approved both agenda items.
