If you want to reach Jonathan Martin, you more than likely can find him on the water, fishing, his favorite thing to do.

For years, the Houma native worked as a charter fisherman, but two years ago, he opened Blues Man Seafood and Catering, a local shop in Erath that offers fresh seafood, and so much more.

Martin took his love for cooking as well as his love for seafood, and turned it into a profitable business that has a bright future. His days may be long and difficult, but for him, it’s all part of the plan.

When he’s not at his food truck, though, he enjoys the simple pleasures of life. He recently sat down and spoke to The Daily Iberian about growing up in Houma, his favorites, and so much more.

You grew up in Houma, so what was that like?

It was a Sportsman’s Paradise, and it truly was. It was home. I grew up hunting and fishing and livestock, but it was always based around cooking and having a good time.

Do you have a favorite type of seafood to eat?

I would say crawfish and oysters, probably.

Would you say you are more of a morning or a night person?

That evolved. When I was younger, it was early morning because of my livelihood, and when I laid all that down, I turned into a night person. I prefer sleeping in a bit if I can. The fishing and hunting part, I was up at 2 or 3 in the morning, every morning. And I take advantage of not having to do that.

What is the last movie you watched?

The last actual movie that I watched start to finish was “Captain Phillips.”

Coffee or tea, and how do you take it?

I am a coffee person, and I take it black.

If you can be any animal in the world, what animal would you be and why?

Eagle, just because of the freedom. Just fly around and catch fish.

Did you ever have dreams to do something different?

I did what I wanted to do with my hunting and fishing thing. That was my goal. I put off the food service for years. I wasn’t ready to give up being out on the water everyday. I just wasn’t ready to give it up. I burned myself and decided to change gears. But I did everything I wanted to do.

Do you wish you would have opened up Blues Man Seafood and Catering earlier?

I do. Everyday I regret not doing what I was doing earlier when I had a lot of more steam.
