Finding her faith again when she needed it most

Sammi Migues’ faith is helping her in more ways than one.

Growing up in Delcambre, Migues was always a believer, raised Catholic, confirmed and baptized. As she became an adult, Migues strayed away from her faith. When she was 19, she was invited to a nondenominational church by her aunt.

“I decided to give it a shot, and I wound up loving it,” Migues said.

She found herself serving more and volunteering at church, and getting involved with small groups.

Then, Covid happened, and she lost her way from the church yet again.

Thankfully, in 2021, she was invited to a new church by a friend. Migues said it was time to go back.

“At that point, I knew I needed Jesus,” Migues said. “I was down in the dumps, I had anxiety and I was depressed. I just wasn’t healthy in all areas.”

That new church now serves as her current church, The Community Church of New Iberia. She hasn’t left, and she feels whole and at home there.

“You really feel like you are part of something,” Migues said. “It has allowed me to step out in faith and step into the calling that God has for me.”

That calling involves one of her passions — being a leader to other women who share her same goals and aspirations, both in life and in faith.

Helping others is something she has always enjoyed and, recently, she has taken on a bigger role in that avenue. Thanks to her faith, it has helped her along the way.

“My faith has allowed me to be a leader and be somebody I never thought I could be because of my past and what I went through. I never felt qualified,” Migues said. “So this past year, I decided to dig deeper in my faith.”

Migues has read the Bible more than she ever has, literally practicing what she preaches, and has been enjoying forming devine relationships and friendships.

And being a part of the Community Church of New Iberia has given her strengths she never knew she had. She was just accepted into Bridges Christian College in New Orleans. This is just a step in her journey to be the person she was meant to be.

“Being a part of the Community Church of New Iberia has allowed me to step into this person that God has called me to be,” Migues said. “And I am so excited.”

The person that Migues is now, is someone she could have used when she was struggling in her faith. A person who was once lost in life and needed guidance. Migues said she knows what it’s like to be a beginner believer.

“I know what it feels like to be scared or nervous to start your journey. It can be intimidating going to bible studies or small groups,” Migues said. “My purpose and passion on Earth is to help others feel seen, heard, and supported.”

As she prepares for this next step in her life, Migues can’t help but get emotional when talking about what Christ means to her. He is the one constant in her life that has given her the strength to fully surrender to the calling he has placed over her life.

Her favorite Bible verse is Proverbs 3:5: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” – one that has brought her life full circle.

Over the course of her life, and these last few years especially, Migues has overcome a lot. She doesn’t even recognize the person she was just a year ago. She takes pride in her journey. And she wants to inspire others who don’t know their own path just yet or where to even start.

“I want them to know they are loved where they are,” Migues said. “God can redeem you no matter what you’ve done or where you’ve been.”
