The Iberia Performing Arts League is opening its theatrical season with a show stopping number that has a little bit of everything for its Teche Area audience.
“Catch Me If You Can” is the flagship musical of the season that features a live orchestra along with dancing for the musical based on the titular autobiography and film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks.
Director Mitch Prudhomme said the show follows a 16-year-old runaway turned con artist who comes into run-ins with FBI agents trying to stop him at every turn.
“It’s based loosely on a supposedly true story of a 16-year-old who runs away from home,” Prudhomme said. “He has a talking ability and uses that to con hi sway into stealing millions of dollars. He poses as a doctor, a lawyer, an airline pile and we follow his journey and the journey of his foils.”
The IPAL cast has been rehearsing for the show since December. Prudhomme called the show very dance heavy, and the performance aspect mixed with a live orchestra makes for a big production that is sure to delight those attending.
“There’s elements of comedy and drama, I would just describe it as a big show stopping musical production,” Prudhomme said. “There’s a lot of theater in this area and what I like about this show is that it hasn’t been done.”
The show features Lafayette-based Will Sciambra playing the lead as Frank Jr. Sciambra has previously worked with IPAL during the production of “Rock of Ages” and is also involved with Christian community theater in the area.
Sciambra said the show has been challenging given how large and involved it is, but the process has been extremely gratifying.
“It’s been really good, it’s probably one of the biggest musicals I’ve done,” he said. “I’m excited for the opening number, it’s a big show stopper.”
Other cast members include Ben Langlinais, Nick Best, Kady Ladun, Parisa Memarian-Liu, Sarah Lagneaux, Annalise Goutierrez and Hollie Guidry.
“Catch Me If You Can” runs from March 7-24 on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets or $20 and can be purchased on tix.com or at the door. The show contains some adult language.
