Junior guard Treyshaun Mack was named Most Outstanding Player in the Non-Select Division IV finals.

Basketball in the Teche Area once again reached new highs as three local teams advanced to the Marsh Madness tournament and Franklin Senior High won its first basketball state title since 1958.

The Hornets impressed this season, picking up a 19-7 record in the regular season before defeating No. 27 Jonesboro-Hodge 80-45, No. 11 South Plaquemines 81-43, No. 3 Oakdale 56-50 and No. 2 Ringgold 63-61 to punch their tickets to a second consecutive LHSAA Non-Select Division IV state championship game. Franklin defeated top-seeded Lakeview 50-45 to claim the trophy.

Joining the Hornets at Lake Charles’ Burton Coliseum was Non-Select Division I’s New Iberia Senior High School. The Yellow Jackets defeated No. 14 Neville 47-37 and No. 6 Southside 44-31 to face off against the defending state champion Green Wave. NISH lost to Ponchatoula 34-26 in the semifinals.

Episcopal of Acadiana also made another trip to Marsh Madness, entering the playoffs as the No. 3 seed but losing to J.S. Clark Leadership Academy in the semifinals, 62-43.

Catholic High didn’t make it to the state tournament following a road loss to University High, but the Panthers impressed with an undefeated District 8-2A championship run and a combined 26-8 record this season.

Loreauville had one of its best seasons in recent memory, winning 17 games in the regular season before defeating No. 22 Pine 52-49 in the first round of the LHSAA Non-Select Division III playoffs. The Tigers ended their season with a 65-45 loss to No. 6 Marksville in the second round.

On the girls side, Highland Baptist (15-10), Franklin (6-15) and St. Martinville (19-7) all performed well enough in the regular season to earn a spot in the playoffs. West St. Mary secured another District 8-2A title with a dominant 17-5 regular season record and an undefeated 12-0 record in district play.

The Lady Bears were defeated by second-seed Northwood-Lena in the quarterfinals after scoring a 48-46 comeback win over Covenant Christian in the second round.
