A St. Martin Parish woman was one of three who died as a result of Monday night’s severe storm that rolled through Acadiana.
The St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office confirmed reports that a female died in Cecilia after a camper rolled over because of high winds, according to the Louisiana Department of Health.
The SMSO said the camper was flipped over in the 1000 block of Paul Road following a suspected tornado that traveled through St. Martin Parish. The sole occupant of the trailer was 24-year-old Lydia Stegall, of Bronson, Texas, who died due to the injuries she sustained.
Sheriff Beckett Breaux advised St. Martin Parish residents Monday evening to stay indoors as the storm was occurring and first responders were responding to multiple calls at once.
Other deaths included a 31-year-old female who died in Port Allen when a tree fell on the trailer in which she resided. The female was nine months pregnant at the time of her death. The fetus did not survive and is being counted as the third storm-related death.
Monday’s storm caused severe damage all throughout Acadiana, with tree damage occurring in areas where the storm was prevalent.
In Iberia Parish, Coteau Elementary School was announced as closing for Tuesday due to a power outage as a result of the storm. The Iberia Parish School District is working with Entergy to get the full extent of the damage.
Parish President Larry Richard said the parish was dealing with several tree falls as a result of the storm, and that Public Works was out until 4 a.m. Tuesday morning dealing with debris.
The City of New Iberia suffered less damage, with Mayor Freddie DeCourt saying there was only one case of a fallen tree needing to be removed.
Power outages occurred in multiple parts of the Teche Area as well.
