Coteau Custom Carts is trying to change the game for transportation.

New Iberia native David Mallet is the owner of Coteau Custom Carts, a business he started in 2017. Located at 7010 Coteau Road in New Iberia, Mallet’s Coteau Custom Carts opened at its current location in 2021.

One of the most unique aspects of Coteau Custom Carts is that they are the largest Evolution EV dealers in the state of Louisiana, Mallet said. They also offer Star EV, Icon EV and soon to be dealers of Venom EVs

“Golf carts are now called EVs,” Mallet said. “They are now eclectic vehicles.”

As a full service dealer, Coteau Custom Carts sells, service and repair all makes and models of golf carts, not just the EVs they sell.

Along with his wife, Monica, who retired from the medical field to help in the business, they are joined by their son Cody Mallet who helps manage the business.

Since its opening, Mallet said they have had constant business at Coteau Custom Carts. Each month, it seems, according to Mallet, they continue to grow, a reflection on the products they offer.

“Golf cars all across the country are very hot, and we are just a small part of it,” Mallet said. “Louisiana as a state is one of the last to really get into golf carts.”

The convenience of them makes them very desirable, Mallet said. You can charge them and go. It’s really that simple.

“People really just like jumping into a golf cart and driving to your local store or a restaurant,” Mallet said.

There isn’t a location that the wheels of Coteau Custom Carts haven’t touched, including in Texas, to Louisiana, and all the way to Belgium.

“We are not only local, but we ship all over the place,” Mallet said.

But here in Louisiana, especially, Mallet said the state is trying to change the laws that allow golf carting to be more accessible and user-friendly.

New Iberia hasn’t developed any ordinances yet that allows for golf carting in the city.

“You have communities like Youngsville where you can ride golf carts in the street,” Mallet said. “Jeanerette, Erath, Delcambre… I can go on and on… they have ordinances that allow it on a certain street.”

Called “street legal,” Mallet said the golf carts are equipped with lights, mirrors, seatbelts and other requirements for proper use of golf carts.

No matter the location, Mallet said golf carts are a popular mode of transportation because of the convenience it brings them. From camping to neighborhood stolls, it’s a popular type of vehicle.

“It’s just a big deal,” Mallet said. “When I first got into it, I had no idea it would be this big. We are in a multi million dollar business.”

As they look to continue growth in 2024, Mallet said the goal for Coteau Custom Carts is to give those who are interested in getting into the world of golf carting, the best business possible, answering any questions they may have.

“Our main goal is to have customers happy when they do business with us at Coteau Custom Carts,” Mallet said.
