A Mass of Christian burial was held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, in St. Pius X Catholic Church in Lafayette, for Robert J. Reed, 85, who passed away on Friday, May 24, 2024, at The Calcutta House-Hospice of Acadiana in Lafayette.

Interment followed the Mass at Calvary Cemetery in Lafayette.

Reverend Monsignor Richard Greene, was the celebrant of the funeral Mass and officiated the services.

Robert, a native of New Iberia and a resident of Lafayette for 60 years, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of service, dedication and love.

Robert proudly served his country as a veteran of the United States Army from 1959 to 1962. During his service he earned the Good Conduct Medal and was recognized as an accomplished marksman sharpshooter. His discipline and commitment during these years were a testament to his character.

He pursued his education with the same determination, attending St. Peter’s College in New Iberia for high school and later graduating from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette with a business degree in 1965. This academic achievement laid the foundation for a successful career. Robert was employed as a purchasing director at PHI, where his expertise and leadership were highly valued. After 37 years of dedicated employment, he retired in 2002.

Robert and his wife Ginger were devoted parishioners of Saint Pius X Catholic Church since 1978. He was an active member of the parish council and the Saint Pius X Knights of Columbus Council 8901, where he was awarded Knight of the Year and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022.

In years past, Robert enjoyed hunting with his son and father and fishing with his grandson Ethan. For nearly 50 years, the Reed family lived in their neighborhood, where “Mr. Bob” was known for fixing many bicycles, being the resident snake killer and always having a pocket full of treats for any dog that crossed his path.

Robert’s life was a shining example of service, hard work and compassion. He will be remembered fondly and missed deeply by all who knew him.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 61 years Ginger Strickland Reed; his son Randy Reed and his wife Adana; his daughter Lynn Reed and her husband Will Robinson; and his grandchildren Ethan Reed, Claire Robinson and Cooper Romero.

He was preceded in death by his parents Manny Odell Reed and Florence Reed.

Special thanks to the staff of the Calcutta House, The Heart Hospital, and AMG Specialty Hospital of Lafayette for their compassionate care.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Calcutta House – Hospice of Acadiana, or Catholic High of New Iberia (formerly St. Peter’s College).
