Skate park project moving along

Although this will be another summer where New Iberia won’t have a public swimming pool, plans are in the works to create something special at the site of the pool in City Park.

The site will be converted into a brand-new skate park that will replace Bayou Wheels Skate Park currently located next to the Sugar Cane Festival Building in City Park.

The project is still a ways off, however. Designs for the park began last year when the company contracted for the project, Grindline Skateparks, held a public meeting in September with members of New Iberia’s skating community.

Different designs and ideas for the future park were thrown out until a design was completed by Grindline.

It was announced this month by Friends of Bayou Wheels Skate Park that construction drawings for the new park are completed. Bidding will be the next part of the project, which will be followed by construction work finally beginning.

As for the future of swimming in New Iberia, a brand-new swimming pool is in the works to be built at Bank Avenue Park. The loss of the swimming pools at West End Park and New Iberia City Park have been a point of complaint for many in the community, and city officials chose Bank Avenue Park due to its proximity in the middle of town.
