Brains and brawn: NISH’s Theriot working hard this summer on and off the field

There has been little in the way of rest and relaxation this summer for Miles Theriot.
The senior-to-be at New Iberia Senior High has had commitments almost every waking moment, whether it’s been competing as a long snapper at football camps, or the two weeks he spent at Tulane University in New Orleans earlier this month.

Theriot, who has a 3.6 GPA and scored a 32 on the ACT, was one of 150 high school students selected to participate in Tulane’s Pre-College Pre-Med summer curriculum. He was among 15 scholars awarded a full scholarship to the program, which received 1,000 applicants.
“It was an introduction to medicine: thinking like a doctor, learning how to take a patient’s history, and communicating and connecting with patients,” said Theriot, who plans to pursue a career as an anesthesiologist.
Before the academic program, Theriot ranked as a top five long snapper at Tulane’s football camp. He placed in the top four at LSU and was the top performer at UL.
“I’d say there is a 90% chance I’ll play football in college,” Theriot said. “I like a balance (of academics and sports). Tulane and Vanderbilt are my top two schools. Both would give me the chance to play at a high level. There is a 10% chance I might go to a stronger academic school like Johns Hopkins that doesn’t have football.”
Theriot has a trip to Nashville planned later this summer so he can experience Vanderbilt first-hand. Next week, he’ll participate in the Kohl’s Kicking National Invitational Scholarship Camp in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. He earned a four-star rating at Kohl’s Texas Showcase earlier this year.
“A good long snapper is a luxury,” NISH coach Josh Lierman said. “They’re hard to find. Miles does it really well. He starts (at right tackle) on the offensive line and knows every position.”

Theriot, who was one correct answer away from a perfect score of 36 on the ACT’s math section, volunteers with the youth at Our Savior’s Church.
He will eventually choose from a large number of colleges that have extended full academic scholarships. A four-inch-thick binder holds the mail Theriot has received from colleges.
“There is a good chance I will return here after college,” he said. “I enjoy the area and would love to make an impact on my city.”
NISH returns nine offensive starters, including Theriot and two-time 1,000-yard rusher Shanga Charles.
