The Greater Iberia Chamber of Commerce unveiled this year’s official poster for the World Championship Gumbo Cookoff this week at Pelican’s On the Bayou.

Board member Andree Schlicher also introduced the winning artist for the annual competition, John Pourcio, who said this was the first time he had ever submitted his work for a competition.

Pourcio, a Lafayette artist, said his idea for the poster stemmed from the cabin painted in the center of the piece.

“I had painted that little house last year,” Pourcio said. “I tried submitting it for last year’s competition but I was too late. So I entered it this year and that’s how it happened.”

Pourcio and the Greater Iberia Chamber of Commerce were both proud of his winning piece that will be featured all over this year’s World Championship Gumbo Cookoff, which is slated to take place Oct. 12-13 in Bouligny Plaza.

Schlicher said the Saturday of the cookoff will be the Cajun Creole Festival and Youth Gumbo Cookoff, while Sunday will be the Gumbo Cookoff proper with dozens of teams competing.

Of course, the two-day event will also have a lineup of musical performances and refreshments served for both days.
