The Bissell Pet Foundation’s Empty the Shelters event got off to a roaring start at Iberia Parish Animal Control.

The event, which began July 8 and ends on July 31, allows IPAC to offer reduced fee adoptions of $50 for dogs and $30 for cats. A dog was adopted on both the first and second day of the event.

“We are in full swing with Empty the Shelters,” IPAC Director Amanda Istre said. “We’re very happy to participate in this event. We hope to keep up the momentum and find these animals the best forever home.”

This week’s featured shelter pets are Jap, Ford, Nix and Andie. Ford and Andie were two of four IPAC dogs that participated in a June adoption event at PetSmart in New Iberia. No dogs were adopted that day, but Ford and Andie made a good impression.

Istre described Ford as a two-year-old lab/pit bull mix who loves squeaky toys. He is a volunteer favorite. Andie is a white mixed-breed female dog who likes to chew on rubber Kong toys and is very playful.

Ford and Nix, who is fascinated with the water hose, were taken in together by animal control officers. Nix went on an excursion with a volunteer and took delight in chasing a ball.

Jap is a 3.5-year-old husky/shepherd/lab mix with striking colors who has won over the hearts of everyone he has met since coming into the shelter as a stray in Dec. 2023.

“He is a very sweet boy,” Istre said. “He is good with other dogs and loves attention from people.”
