Dre’ Fusilier continues to rise through the ranks of the coaching profession.
The New Iberia Senior High grad announced on social media on July 29 that he was joining the staff at the Univ. of Houston – just in time for the start of the Cougars’ fall camp.

“Blessed to join (coach Willie Fritz) and his staff here in H-Town. Go Coogs!” Fusilier wrote on X (formerly Twitter).”
Fritz is entering his first year at Houston after a successful tenure at Tulane. He led the Green Wave to 11 and 12-win seasons during his final two years, including a 2023 Cotton Bowl win over Southern California that tied the 1998 team for most single-season wins.
“I’m excited for Dre’,” said Rick Hutson, who coached Fusilier at NISH. “That’s a great move, going to a Power Five conference. He interned with the Jacksonville Jaguars. That’s going to help him down the road, too.”

Fusilier played running back and linebacker for Hutson at NISH. He initially walked on at Grambling State and earned a scholarship spot, playing in 31 games during his career (all 13 as a senior).
“When Dre’ was a freshman, the players at Grambling walked off,” Hutson said of a 2013 boycott. “I encouraged him to stick it out, to not run from a bad situation. He stuck through it and earned a scholarship later in the semester. He got his master’s (degree). He is a success story.”

Fusilier has coached running backs at Grambling and Southern University. He is an offensive assistant at Houston, which fired coach Dana Holgorsen after a 4-8 season (2-7 Big 12 conf. record). In 2022, the Cougars went 8-5 overall, 5-3 in their final season in the American Athletic Conference.
“Dre’ is a great young man who relates well to young people,” Hutson said. “He knows how to be a good coach and not just a buddy to players. He has the respect of the players.”
Another NISH product, Jordy Joseph, is Houston’s running backs coach. Joseph, who previously worked for Fritz at Tulane, comes to the Cougars from Southern Miss. The Cougars signed Jeanerette tight end Traville Frederick, who had an offer from Alabama, in their 2024 recruiting class.
Houston, which opens the season at home vs. UNLV on Aug. 31, has games against Oklahoma, Cincinnati, TCU, Kansas, Utah, Kansas St., BYU, Arizona, Baylor and Rice.
