IPAC Shelter Pet(s) of the Week – Freddy, Winnie, Mila and Banjo

Iberia Parish Animal Control’s Shelter Pets of the Week resumes with four adorable dogs that are available for adoption.

Freddy is a one-year-old terrier mix who is around 30 lbs. IPAC manager Amandra Istre said he is almost fully grown – he may add five more lbs.

Freddy was found in June as a stray along with Loretta, who has already found a home. He is heartworm negative, very sweet and loving and enjoys rolling around in the grass when he gets a rare breath of fresh air.

Winnie, a two-year-old pit bull mix, has had a rough, short life, having been overbred and eventually dumped as a stray after she had just given birth to a litter of puppies, who were not located.

When Winnie was found by the IPAC staff, she was severely underweight. Despite all those obstacles, Istre said Winnie is a “super sweet dog who loves neck scratches.” Winnie spends most of her time snoozing and would make an ideal couch potato for a family.

Mila is a quiet, laid-back, three-year-old pit bull who was also severely emaciated when picked up as a stray. She is slowly putting on weight but needs out of the “loud and chaotic” shelter environment, said Istre, who added that Mila has an “adorable unique face and a gorgeous brown coat.”

Banjo, a 1 1/2-year-old lab mix, has lots of spunk and energy. He was abandoned by his owners and is “a very sweet and loving kiddo,” Istre said. He is heartworm negative.

In other shelter news, two dogs were saved by rescue organizations, another was adopted, and Rufus, who had been at IPAC the longest at 269 days, was also tagged for rescue.

“A huge thanks to all the volunteers who made that happen,” said Istre, who added that the shelter recently took in 13 dogs in a mix of strays and cruelty/abandonment cases.

“We’re struggling to keep up with the constant influx of animals and the stray population.”

Most adoption fees are $100, which includes rabies vaccine, microchip and spay neuter.
