Hamilton selected as Chief Judge for the 16th Judicial District Court

Judge Roger Hamilton was selected as the Chief Judge for the 16th Judicial District by the district judges in the 16th Judicial District. According to the Louisiana Constitution, the Chief Judge exercises administrative functions prescribed by rule of court. His term as Chief Judge will begin on September 18, 2024 to September 30, 2026.
Judge Roger P Hamilton Jr was elected to serve as District Court Judge, Division H of the 16th Judicial District Court in 2020.
Currently, Judge Hamilton serves as a member of the American Judges Association Criminal and Juvenile Justice Committee and the Louisiana Supreme Court Judicial Security Committee.

Judge Hamilton was born and raised in St Martin Parish. His family moved from St Martin Parish to Iberia Parish. He graduated from New Iberia Senior High School in 1994. He attended Nicholls State University and graduated Cum Laude in 1998. He was selected into the Nicholls State University Hall of Fame in 1998. He graduated in 2001 from Louisiana State University Paul M Hebert Law Center with his Juris Doctor.

His parents are Carmen and the late Roger Hamilton Sr. He has a daughter Regan Paige Hamilton.

Judge Hamilton served as President of the Louisiana 4-H Foundation and was a member of the Louisiana State Bar Association House of Delegates. He coached girls basketball at Catholic High-New Iberia and Loreauville High School.

Judge Hamilton began his legal career in 2001 as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable Paul J. deMahy. He began working as an Assistant District Attorney in May 2002 until December 2020. Judge Hamilton also served as General Counsel to the Lafayette Parish School Board and the City of Jeanerette.
Judge Hamilton served as an adjunct professor at South Louisiana Community College and Nicholls State University.
Judge Lewis Pitman term as Chief Judge ended on September 18, 2024. Judge Pitman served as Chief Judge from October 1, 2018 to September 18, 2024.
