Gumbo season is here in Iberia Parish once again as the 34th World Championship Gumbo Cookoff plans to bring a weekend of delicious food and entertainment to the area.

The two-day event begins Oct. 12 with the Cajun Creole Foodfest, which will bring in a variety of non-gumbo dishes that event-goers will be able to enjoy. Dozens of cooking teams will be set up all along Bouligny Plaza, and many of the booths will have their own themes that will be displayed along with the food.

The Youth Gumbo Cookoff is also slated for Oct. 12, and musical performances will include Chubby Carrier, The Bad Boys and Cajun Company.

The gumbo competition begins in earnest Oct. 13, with teams competing to put their gumbo at top place in a variety of categories.

Geno Delafose and the French Rockin Boogie as well as Sideshow are both slated to perform on Oct. 13, and the awards ceremony for the competition will begin in the afternoon.

The Gumbo Cookoff is put on by the Greater Iberia Chamber of Commerce and serves as the chamber’s main fundraiser throughout the year. The cookoff regularly attracts cooks from outside the parish and even Louisiana to participate in the competition.
