School Board to consider stipends for teachers, support staff

The Iberia Parish School Board will consider a recommendation to provide one-time non-recurring stipends to all active full time certified and non-certified employees at Wednesday’s board meeting.
The stipend comes after the state had given the school district an allocation for a one time stipend in the amount of $2,000 for certificated and $1,000 for support staff. The district received the funding on Sept. 17 in the amount of $3.2 million.
Because staff members of the Pre-K program were not accounted for in the calculation of the stipend, the recommendation includes a request to use the General Fund for those employees to receive the same corresponding amounts. The 49 employees of the Pre-K department will lead to an estimated $92,700 from the General Fund.
In other business, the school board will consider a request from the Jeanerette High School Alumni Association to rename the Jeanerette High School Tiger Stadium as Tinguee-Wallace Tiger Stadium in honor Coaches Larry Tinguee Sr. and Coach James Wallace Sr. According to the association, both men have made significant contributions to the community, shaping generations of families through their dedication to education and development of the youth in Jeanerette.
The board will also vote to hire a special counsel to process immigration applications and other services necessary in connection to international associate teachers hired for the district’s French Immersion Program.
The meeting takes place at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the board’s administrative office on Jane Street.
