The 14th annual New Iberia Beneath the Balconies event is happening this weekend, with theatrical vignettes and musical performances planned for one of the city’s most unique events of the year.
Beneath the Balconies takes event-goers on a tour of downtown New Iberia’s unique architectural history. At each stop, a unique event is planned ranging from a performance from Iberia Performing Arts League actors to music from school bands.
The event begins at 11 a.m. Sunday with a lunch for sale at the west lawn of Shadows-on-the-Teche. Those attending will be able to sip the famous Bayou Breeze while enjoying music from Fifth Edition and a special performance from voices of Acadiana Christian School.
The first balcony performance begins at 1 p.m. with “Sounds of the Shadows” honoring Bubba Murrell at the Shadows front gallery. The event will then take event-goers to the Alvarez-Jordan residences, Kyle Cox residence, the corner of Main and Iberia for a “crossroads jam.”
The celebration then heads to the Bouillon-Briggs residences for a performance of “The Addams Family”; Broussard Poche LLP. for a performance of “Catch Me If You Can”; Bouligny Plaza gazebo for a performance of “A Little Bit of Soul” with Bobby Wilson and the Steamboat Warehouse Pavilion, where “The Victory Belles” will be performing.
The free community celebration will also feature the Bunk Johnson Brazz Band, who has traditionally led the crowd of event-goers and played jazz between each destination.
