Male Athlete of the Week
Hayden Benoit, Loreauville Football
Senior QB Hayden Benoit was nearly perfect in Loreauville’s 57-3 win over District 7-2A rival Houma Christian last week. Benoit went 9-10 for 264 yards and 4 passing touchdowns and added 33 yards on the ground. The Tigers were winless through Week 5 but have a combined score of 115-3 in the past two games, with Benoit playing a major role in the turnaround.
Tyler Blissett, Highland Baptist Cross Country
Blissett once again proved that he is one of the best runners in the country, taking sixth place at the Watson Classic hosted by Mississippi College with a time of 15:42, a new 5k personal record for the junior.
Karon Eugene, Catholic High Football
It’s hard to pin down just one outstanding performer from Catholic High’s 62-6 win over Delcambre, but sophomore all-around athlete Karon Eugene deserves a shout-out. With two interception return TDs, one in the first quarter and another in the second, Eugene has proven himself once again to be one of the top defensive backs in the Teche Area.
Anderson Frank, Episcopal of Acadiana Cross Country
Senior runner Anderson Frank added another winner’s medal to his collection, claiming the top spot at the Randy Zelle classic at the New Orleans City Park with a time of 15:41.
Nathan LeBlanc, NISH Football
Third-string QBs are usually safe from being thrown into the fire, especially in their freshman season, but that’s exactly what LeBlanc experienced last Friday as the Yellow Jackets battled Barbe. With QB1 Kaiden McGlasson out with a broken clavicle and QB2 Peyton Landry suffering an ankle injury mid-game, LeBlanc took the field and looked like a grizzled veteran almost immediately. NISH lost the game 35-7, but LeBlanc might be just the spark to turn the losing streak around this week against Sam Houston.
Dominick Lewis, Jeanerette Football
With 10 total tackles and two crucial interceptions against St. Martinville, Jeanerette DB Dominick Lewis was a key player in the Tigers’ 26-13 win to remain undefeated this season at 6-0. The Tigers have now taken the No. 1 spot in the Non-Select Division IV power ratings and will hope to ride the top spot all the way to the school’s first-ever football state championship game in December.
Brock Mitchell, Westgate Football
Freshman Brock Mitchell has made the QB position his own. Against Rayne, Mitchell completed seven of 11 passes for 141 yards and three touchdowns in Westgate’s 59-14 win. Mitchell’s contribution doesn’t just begin and end with his on-field performance, however, as the freshman QB’s competency has allowed senior RB Tavias Gordon and senior WR Davian Jackson to return to their respective positions after brief stints under center.
Female Athlete of the Week
Chloe Delahoussaye, Highland Baptist Cross Country
Senior runner Chloe Delahoussaye set a new personal record in the 5k event at the Watson Classic hosted by Mississippi College over the weekend. Delahoussaye was a key member of last season’s state championship team and, alongside fellow senior runner Lillian Nicholson, will provide leadership and strong performances as the team attempts to repeat.
Amelie Trappey, Catholic High Volleyball
Sophomore middle hitter Amelie Trappey helped the Lady Panthers pick up two straight-set wins over district opponents last week before adding a win against Vandebilt Catholic at the Sugar Bowl Classic in New Orleans. Trappey has amassed 157 kills, 200 digs and 23 aces so far this season as Catholic High moved to 18-8 over the weekend.
