Early voting for the Dec. 7 election continues in Iberia Parish, with several state propositions and two runoff elections for New Iberia districts on the ballot.

New Iberia residents in District 2 and District 5 will be making their final selection for their next council representative after the November election failed to produce a candidate who garnered more than 50% of the vote.

In District 2, where current Councilman Marlon Lewis will be termed out, candidates Rosaline Bobb and Warren White will be reaching the finish line on their election campaigns to determine the new representative of the district, which includes much of New Iberia’s West End.

Bobb and White were the top two candidates during the Nov. 5 election, which had a third candidate in Ben Meyers.

In District 5, candidates Ronald Davis and Krystal Boyance will also be facing the last lap of their campaigns as voters choose a councilperson to replace outgoing Councilwoman Deedy Johnson-Reid.

Voters across the parish will be placing their votes on four constitutional amendments that will be on the ballot as well.

The first amendment, if approved, will allow the Louisiana Supreme Court to sanction a judge upon an investigation by the Judiciary Commission and provide that the recommended sanction be instituted by the commission or by a majority of the Supreme Court. It will also provide for the appointment of five members of the Judiciary Commission.

Another amendment will ask voters if they support an amendment to require that the Louisiana Legislature wait for at least 48 hours prior to concurring in a conference committee report or amendments to a bill appropriating money.

Another amendment would allow the Legislature to extend a regular session in increments of two days up to a maximum of six days if necessary to pass a bill that appropriates money.

The final proposition asks voters if they support an amendment to eliminate mandatory tax sales for nonpayment of property taxes and requires the Legislature to provide for such procedures by law. It would also limit the amount of penalty and interest on delinquent property taxes and provide for the postponement of property tax payments under certain circumstances.

Early voting will take place from Friday, Nov. 22 to Saturday, Nov. 30. The polls will be open from 8:30 a.m. until 6 p.m.

The early voting period excludes Sunday, Nov. 24; Thursday, Nov. 28; and Friday, Nov. 29. Those looking to early vote can go to the Iberia Parish Courthouse or Jeanerette City Hall.
