Both the boys and girls basketball teams at Acadiana Christian School could be celebrating district titles.
The boys team has already clinched its second consecutive league championship. The Lions, 8-5 overall and 4-0 in district contests with five regular season games remaining, are trying to improve their playoff seeding.
“We’re jockeying for playoff position heading into the meat grinder of our schedule,” said coach Carroll Olivier, whose team is currently a No. 6 seed.
Kollin Thibeaux is averaging 28.5 points, 3.6 steals and 2.4 assists per game. Other statistical leaders include Brandon Judice (8.5 ppg, 4.9 apg, 2.6 spg), Landon Decuir (5 ppg, 5.9 rpg), Jude Wilder (5.9 rpg, 2.2 blocks), Layne Hebert (2.2 spg, 1.3 apg) and Zack Lacoste (4.5 rpg).
“Thibeaux is a phenomenal shooter,” Olivier said. “He’s a pure point guard with great poise. He guards 94 feet of the court. He’s a gym rat.”
Judice made five 3-pointers in a 58-37 win over John Paul the Great that clinched the league crown. Thibeaux scored 31 points. Hebert added six.
It’s Decuir’s first year playing basketball. Olivier said the 5-foot-8 senior usually guards the opponent’s big man, often giving up 5-6 inches. Hebert is shooting over 40% from the field. Freshman Isaiah Burch and sophomore Brent Henry get steady minutes.
“Our assistant coaches (Dre Lyons and Carroll Olivier Jr.) lead the charge with the boys,” Olivier said. “I’m building them into a head coaching role. They’re doing a phenomenal job.”
The Lions travel to Bishop Noland (9-2) in Lake Charles on Jan. 16 ahead of senior night on Jan. 23 vs. Faith Training Academy of Leesville.
The girls program, which was resurrected this season after years of being dormant, is 12-2 overall with close losses to undefeated Northeast Louisiana Christian from Monroe.
“As a starter program, we’re doing really well,” said Olivier, who coaches the team with help from his wife, Allison Saunders Olivier, and Ana Trueil. “We’re trying to get a really good playoff seed so we can either play at home or get a bye to the state tournament (in Pineville).”
The Lady Lions were down by 12 points at Northeast Louisiana, which has won 24 consecutive games, but forced overtime and lost by four points.
“I’m grateful for where we are,” Olivier said. “Hopefully we can join the boys in winning district. First, we have to take care of business this week.”
Yvette Olivier leads the team in scoring at 23.5 ppg. The junior is averaging 6.4 steals, 5.4 rebounds and four assists. Eighth-grader Kyla Polk has been a phenom (10.1 ppg, 9.5 rpg, 4.5 spg, 3.2 apg and 1.9 blocks).
Freshman Kacey Moore (5 ppg, 2.7 spg) and eighth-grader Tylar Moore (4.3 rpb) are joined by their older sister, forward Addelyn Moore, who is third in blocked shots.
“Yvette has been leading in a phenomenal way,” Olivier said. “Addy Moore is a huge leader. The stats don’t reflect her contributions. She holds the other girls accountable. Avery Tabb is an eighth grader who has hit some big 3s. Grace Hebert brings a level of physicality.”
