Yellow Jackets making it work with limited roster

New Iberia Senior High hasn’t played a basketball game this season with all of the players on the roster.

Devin Frank hasn’t suited up yet (injury) although coach Colby Batiste is optimistic that the talented 6-foot-4 senior, an excellent outside shooter, could return next week.

The Yellow Jackets, playing without Frank and starting point guard Tre Lively (concussion) at home on Monday, got 16 points from Otis Anderson, who was playing in his third game, in a 45-24 win over Loreauville.

“We’ve been through a roller coaster ride,” said Batiste, who is in his first year at NISH after moving over from Highland Baptist. “I guess I got baptized into 5A with these teams we’ve been playing and dealing with multiple injuries and situations.

“We’ve never had our full squad. Hopefully we’ll get them back towards the second half, make a nice district run and close out the season on a good note.”

Anderson made 3 of 4 field goals in the first quarter with two 3-pointers as NISH took a 10-0 lead. Hayden Benoit got Loreauville on the scoreboard with a 3 after the Tigers missed their first 12 shots.

“Our kids wanted to redeem themselves,” Batiste said. “We had a tough loss (to Westgate) on Friday. We came in wanting to really work hard, play our style of basketball and show more resilience.”

Shane Westley, who added 14 points, made five consecutive shots during a span in the second half. Westley’s consecutive lay-ups were followed by a Brian Coursey lay-up during an 8-0 run that expanded the lead to 43-20.

“Shane does a good job,” Batiste said. “He does a lot of things we ask that don’t show up in the stat sheet. He’s a great rebounder. He plays well without the ball. He is a great cutter and is able to score in different places.”

Myles Jones, who scored seven points, moved to point guard in Lively’s absence and orchestrated an offense that got many high percentage shots near the basket. Coursey chipped in six points and slammed home a dunk in the fourth quarter.

“We tried to work the ball inside,” Batiste said. “My kids came prepared. We watched film, came in and did a nice walkthrough where the coaches put them in the right positions.

“My assistant coaches (Casey McGrew, Wiliam Fain and Nicholas Weaver) are doing a heck of a job.”

NISH is 10-8 and No. 24 in the Division I nonselect power ratings. Loreauville is 11-5 and No. 11 in the Division III nonselect power ratings. Vaschon Blount had nine points and Dylan Singleton chipped in eight for the Tigers.
