A group of passionate library lovers rallied at George Rodrigue Park on Valentine’s Day to show the Iberia Parish Library some love.

The League of Women Voters of Iberia gathered at the park to hold signs and offer support for the parish library.

“Today is Library Lovers Day, so we decided to show our love for our library,”  chapter president Charleen Markle. “The library is a valuable partner with us in voter registration around the parish. And we hold our meetings at the Main Library.”

Voters in the parish will be heading to the polls to make a crucial decision on the Iberia Parish Library System’s future on March 29 to renew the library’s funding.

The vote will ask residents to continue to levy a special tax of 4.50 mills for a period of 10 years beginning in 2025 and ending in 2034 for the purpose of operating and maintaining public libraries in the parish.

“The library is such a valuable resource for Iberia Parish,” Markle said. “We don’t have a movie theater, bowling alley, skating rink or swimming pool. But what we do have is six library branches that offer thousands of programs every year for every age group. And it’s free. You can’t beat that.”

Anyone interested in joining the nonpartisan activism of the League of Women Voters of Iberia is welcome to attend the next meeting on February 24 at 6 p.m. in the Main Library.
