New Iberia bids farewell to winter with annual Festival of Live Oaks

New Iberia City Park was transformed into the perfect place to enjoy the spring weather Saturday during the annual Festival of Live Oaks and Craft Vendor event.

The event was initially supposed to be held the prior week, but had to be rescheduled due to unforeseen rain that swept through the Teche Area. However, the schedule change did not deter a large number of people from enjoying the festival as City Park was flooded with people and parking quickly became hard to come by.

The space behind Cyr-Gates Community Center was revamped with a stage and several booths along the walking path so that music and cooks could bring entertainment and food to the Iberia Parish public, and a selection of bands were hired to keep the fun going.

The Festival of Live Oaks, which has been a New Iberia staple for more than two decades, was created with the intention of having a local festival that celebrates the unique and beautiful oak trees that are seen all throughout south Louisiana, including City Park.

In addition to the usual festivities, extra fun for kids was also present like an Easter egg hunt where children scrambled all throughout City Park for the contest.

Fun jumps and other recreational activities were all set up for the young ones attending while parents could sample the wide selection of food being cooked Saturday afternoon.

Nina Broussard, who was at the event with her husband and children, said she lived in Lafayette and attended the festival to spend the day with local relatives.

“I’ve been shopping and the kids have been playing,” she said. “They definitely enjoy it.

Musical performances throughout the day included Andy Smith, Donna Angelle and Rusty Metoyer and the Zydeco Krush.
