The Books Along the Teche Literary Festival ended with a symphony concert put on by the Iberia Cultural Resources Association.
The event, which is usually held on the grass at New Iberia City Park, had to be relocated to the Cyr-Gates Community Center thanks to rain Saturday that made the concert grounds too wet on the day of the concert.
“This is a new venue, we weren’t sure what to do and I’m happy we did,” ICRA member Cathy Indest said during the event.
Symphony Sunday is one of four completely free concerts that the ICRA brings to New Iberia annually. The group hires the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra for each event, who always bring an interesting mix of musical selections that are family-friendly.
“We’re going to take you on a journey,” Conductor David Torns said about the selection.
The concert included musical selections from John Williams that included the theme of “Star Wars” to selections from George Gershwin to Duke Ellington and Rogers and Hammerstein’s “The Sound of Music.”
The wide selection hopes to take music lovers who aren’t even that familiar with orchestral music and find something that they are familiar with in order to get them hooked on the live concert experience.
Symphony Sunday in the Park is the third of four seasonal concerts put on by the ICRA. The last concert of the season will be the Stars and Stripes concert, which pays homage to local veterans who have served in the military, and is slated to take place in June.
