Why is the Teche Area important to you?

The Teche area is important to me because it is home. It is where I was raised and it is where I choose to raise my family. Most of my family still live in the Teche area, so I want to make sure I am doing my part in making the Teche area better.

What do you do for fun?

For fun, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. Usually we are at the ballpark with our 12 year old son, watching him do what he loves to do! On the off season, we typically have friends over for barbecue, pool time, or just enjoying the weather while catching up with each other.

We also enjoy going to the local high schools and watching football and baseball games.

What are your hobbies?

I do not have much time to enjoy hobbies these days, but when I do, I enjoy fishing. I only enjoy fishing when I’m actually catching fish though. I am not one to sit for hours and not catch anything lol.

Who are your role models?

My parents are my role models. My mom was a stay at home mom due to illness. Though she has had her own health issues since her early 20’s, she was still such an amazing care taker to my siblings and myself. She was and still is an amazing mother to us, and now a fantastic Nana. I became a nurse because of my mother. I wanted to be a caregiver not only to my family, but to others.

My dad was always a hard worker, working in the oil and natural gas industry and as a police officer. When I was about 7 years old, my dad was first elected to the City Council in Franklin. I saw how much time and effort he put into the City Council, and thought how I could NEVER do that! He was so attentive and helpful to the residents of Franklin and was still able to be a great Dad. In my mind, there  was no way I could ever do all the things he was doing for our community. 25 years later, I was elected to the New Iberia City Council! Never say never!

What are some of your plans or goals?

With having a 12 year old son, I really want to focus on getting our youth more involved in the community. Anytime you see me volunteering in the community, I typically have my son and a few of his friends. I try to bring as many of his friends/teammates/classmates to events where they can learn to help their community. So far, I’ve gotten the youth involved in helping with our neighborhood free garage event, which helps those in need, I’ve gotten the youth involved in litter pickups, and I’ve gotten them involved in sandbagging for the elderly and disabled.

I truly believe the way we can get our youth off of the streets, is by getting them involved in helping their community at a young age. Of course we also need parents to be parents, but that is a generational issue that needs to be fixed within the home. I plan to help as many kids as I can with making good choices in life.

Is there anything else you would like to say?

I would like to thank my husband, Jeremy Marcotte and my son Parker Marcotte for supporting me in all of my endeavors. My husband knew what he was getting into when he first asked me out at 15 years old, so he has been around my shenanigans for a long time! My son had no choice but still supports my need to volunteer and need to help others…for the most part! lol

Thank you to the person who nominated me for this honor, and thank you to the Daily Iberian for allowing me to be part of this group of young professionals!
