Why is the Teche Area important to you?
The Teche Area is important because it has shaped the type of person I am. It holds memories, traditions, and people who were part of my childhood. It’s the sense of belonging, familiar streets, parades, and things learned here that have created a foundation for my identity. Even when you leave, the Teche Area seems to remain with you, providing a sense of place and homesickness. They tell us that home is where the heart is, and for me, home will always be beside the bayou.
What do you do for fun?
Dr. Phil is one of my go-to shows to unwind. I like listening to different life situations and how people deal with problems. The show touches on a range of topics, from relationships and mental health to crime and personal development. It’s interesting to see Dr. Phil’s advice and how he helps people through their problems. While it’s been referred to as “corny daytime TV,” it’s actually fascinating and insightful. It is an educational show that informs me about human behavior, psychology, and conflict resolution. Whether it is a dramatic confrontation or a success story, I always pick up something worthwhile by watching the show.
What are your hobbies?
Recently, I’ve found that gardening has become one of my top hobbies. Spending time outdoors, digging into the soil, and watching plants grow really feels therapeutic. While I’m no pro, I find that every step of gardening has its own charm. Gardening has helped me cultivate patience and has given me a way to get ahead of these rising grocery prices. Gardening is like an oasis of calm away from the hustle, and watching something thrive because of your care is extremely fulfilling.
Who are your role models?
Even though I’ve encountered numerous wonderful individuals in my life, I must save the title of “role model” for my number one lady—my mom. My mom is the strongest and hardest-working person I know. She has been through many adversities but never let them stop her from taking care of our family. Despite the difficulties of being a mother, she has instilled in her children the love of God and taught us the importance of kindness, persistence, and responsibility. I tell my mom all the time that when it comes to children, she’s 2 for 2. Her love and strength make me want to keep going and never give up on my dreams. She has shown me what it means to be independent, strong, and kind, and I admire her more than words can express.
What are some of your plans or goals?
With a strong foundation in biochemistry, I am now following my passion for mental health by pursuing a master’s degree in counseling. My immediate goal is to obtain the qualifications and education required to help people on their mental health journeys. Down the road, my long-term goal is to establish my own counseling practice, specifically one that caters to the needs of people of color. By providing a safe and inclusive setting, I aim to offer culturally responsive care that acknowledges and addresses the unique challenges and needs of marginalized communities.
Is there anything else you would like to say?
I am truly thankful and blessed to be a Top 20 Under 40 recipient. This would not have been possible without the unwavering faith of God, my family, and the incredible people who keep challenging, inspiring, and motivating me to be better. Their encouragement, guidance, and support have been instrumental in shaping my journey. I thank every individual who has been a part of this amazing chapter of my life, and I am excited to keep pushing the limits and contributing positively.
