Back-to-back state champs Franklin Senior High headline a talented group of local basketball players honored on this year’s Best of the Teche teams.

Senior Treyshaun Mack earned Most Valuable Player honors for his stellar performances during the Hornets’ run back to the Burton Coliseum for another state title. Mack was also named Division IV Non-Select Most Outstanding Player honors, scoring 16 points against Vinton in addition to 11 rebounds and one steal.

Our second Most Valuable Player was Acadiana Christian’s Yvette Olivier. Olivier, a transfer from Highland Baptist, made an immediate impact on the newly formed Lady Lions team. Olivier scored her 1,800th point this season and was named the ACEL Division I Most Valuable Player.

Franklin head coach Tremayne Johnson and New Iberia Senior High coach Rikola Henry were named Coaches of the Year for their successes this season. Johnson ended the year with a second consecutive state championship with Franklin and Henry’s improvements with the Lady Jackets team led to their first playoff appearance since 2020.

New to the Best of the Teche awards this year is Newcomer of the Year, an honor for a player who made an impact on his or her team in their first season.

The boys Newcomer of the Year is Westgate’s Cayden Lancelin. Lancelin, one of the area’s top guards, helped to return the Tigers to the playoffs after an almost four-year absence and played a crucial role in Westgate’s wins over crosstown rival New Iberia Senior High.

The girls Newcomer of the Year is Kyla Polk. Polk, a middle schooler at Acadiana Christian who made waves with the Loreauville varsity team last season, was a key piece in building a state-championship level program at Acadiana Christian for the first time in the school’s 17-year history.
