A New Iberia Police Department police officer was arrested Thursday and charged with domestic abuse child endangerment by the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office. 

IPSO spokesman Maj. Wendell Raborn said Richard Geiger of New Iberia, who was hired by the NIPD, was arrested without incident. Geiger also was charged with false imprisonment with an armed weapon. 

New Iberia Mayor Freddie DeCourt confirmed Thursday afternoon that Geiger resigned from the NIPD following his arrest. The arrest comes three days before the NIPD is scheduled to take over law enforcement services for the city of New Iberia.
