- Saints trade up to take defensive end
NEW ORLEANS — The conclusion of the New Orleans Saints’ preseason Thursday night made the picture of the regular-season roster less cloudy.
The official list of 53 names won’t be known until the weekend or perhaps early next week. NFL teams are required to reduce their rosters to 53 players by 3 p.m. Saturday.
The Saints traditionally are slow to announce their roster, so even though most if not all of the transactions will leak out over the weekend, it might not be publicly official until Monday. The Saints could continue to tweak the roster beyond that if they see opportunities to bring in players they see as upgrades.
But here’s what we know:
New Orleans seemingly settled the quarterback situation by acquiring Teddy Bridgewater in a trade with the New York Jets on Wednesday. Bridgewater will be the primary backup to Drew Brees, virtually assuring that Tom Savage will be among the players released. Taysom Hill had an up-and-down but mostly up preseason and will be the No. 3 quarterback in addition to being a special-teams stalwart. Rookie J.T. Barrett won’t make the active roster, but could land on the practice roster.
At running back, Mark Ingram II will officially be suspended for four games once he makes the 53-man roster. Alvin Kamara, of course, will be starter in Ingram’s absence and fullback Zach Line and versatile Trey Edmunds seem secure.
Jonathan Williams and rookie Boston Scott of Louisiana Tech were both workhorses in the preseason and seem strong candidates to stick around. It’s unclear what veteran Shane Vereen’s limited action in the preseason means. The Saints know what he can do and they might figure he’s more likely to clear waivers than either of the youngsters and therefore could be brought back once Ingram is placed on the suspended list. So don’t count out Vereen.
Cameron Meredith finally made some plays in the preseason finale, cementing his spot alongside third-round draft choice Tre-Quan Smith as the primary complements to incumbent starters Michael Thomas and Ted Ginn Jr., though Ginn has not had a strong preseason.
The Saints reportedly released veteran wide receiver Brandon Tate on Friday, which would seem to be good news for Tommylee Lewis, who can fill the same dual roles.
Benjamin Watson seems to have the starting tight end spot locked up with six players competing for two more spots. Josh Hill and Garrett Griffin might have a leg up, but Dan Arnold is a converted wide receiver who could provide some versatility if they decide to keep him.
The Saints offensive line is set and there are likely just three backup spots available. Jermon Bushrod was signed as a veteran free agent to be a versatile backup, but the Saints could opt for a younger tackle such as fourth-round pick Rick Leonard. Veteran interior swingman Josh LeRibeus seems to have the most secure spot among the backups but two youngsters — Baton Rouge native Cameron Tom and LSU rookie Will Clapp — have shown well and have comparable versatility.
Virtually everyone on the defensive line made plays in one or more of the preseason games, leading plenty of strong candidates for back-up spots. Devaroe Lawrence might have been the most impressive player beyond the seven who are locks to make the roster. Taylor Stallworth, Mitchell Loewen and Jay Bromley are in the mix with Lawrence and there not might be room for all of them.
Special teams value will go a long way toward determining the final spots at linebacker and defensive back. Linebackers Nate Stupar (seven tackles, three sacks, fumble recovery and interception) and Jayrone Elliott (2-yard return of a blocked punt for a touchdown) excellent special teams players who strengthened their cases Thursday night, though Stupar had a bad offsides penalty.
After the top six defensive backs are five players who are tightly bunched and being evaluated in the kicking game – Chris Banjo, Arthur Maulet, Justin Hardee, Natrell Jamerson and Kamrin Moore.
