Catholic High’s Cormier, Brown voted Players of Week

A pair of Catholic High School seniors were recognized by fans of Teche Area high school football for their efforts in the Panthers’ big season-opening win at Westgate.

Running back Zoe Cormier, who gained nearly 240 yards in his first offensive start for the Panthers after starting on defense last season, was voted Offensive Player of the Week in a poll conducted on The Daily Iberian’s website, sponsored by the law firm of Haik, Minvielle & Grubbs.

Teammate Marlon Brown was voted the Defensive Player of the Week by fans.

Cormier had 234 yards and four touchdowns on 18 carries to lead a 500-plus yard rushing attack in a 48-21 win. He received 43.9 percent of the vote to narrowly outpace Delcambre’s Parker Nunez in the online poll.

Nunez rushed for 138 yards and three touchdowns as DHS slammed South Cameron 49-25. Nunez had 41.7 percent of the fan vote.

Centerville’s Andrew Cuvillier ran for 169 yards and three touchdowns in a 54-19 win over Northwood-Lena and received 10.3 percent of the fan vote.

St. Martinville tailback Travien Benjamin rushed for 198 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries in a 38-21 win over New Iberia and received 4.1 percent of the fan vote.

Brown, a nose guard, had nine tackles and five quarterback pressures for Catholic High in its win. He received more than half of the fan vote, 55.6 percent.

Dravyn Guilbeau of Centerville had 26.8 percent of the vote after making nine tackles with one quarterback hurry and one fumble recovery.

Derrick Wright of Highland Baptist had an interception and three pass breakups in his team’s opening loss to Houma Christian. He had 17.6 percent of the fan vote.

Fans nominate players for the weekly honor by posting a comment to the story seeking nominations. Nominations are taken from Friday nights following the weekly prep games through midday Monday with the top nominees selected for the poll, which begins mid-afternoon each Monday and continues through early Thursday afternoon. The top vote getters each week are the Players of the Week and receive a certificate and T-shirt.

In order to nominate, one must sign in with their Facebook page. Only players for the 14 teams in The Daily Iberian’s coverage area are eligible.
