Catholic High’s Amos, Landry voted Players of Week

- Catholic High school's Christopher Landry was voted the Haik, Minvielle & Grubbs Defensive Player of the Week for the second week of the high school football season.
Two big wins by New Iberia high schools led to a competitive battle for Player of the Week honors as voted on by fans of Teche Area high school football teams.
Westgate’s 53-6 win over Jeanerette and Catholic High’s 42-14 win over St. Louis provided plenty of highlights for both teams, and nominations for the Haik, Minvielle & Grubbs Player of the Week honors on The Daily Iberian’s website.
Catholic High quarterback Trey Amos took a narrow win over Westgate QB Jaquialen Allen by less than 1 percent of the total vote. The two outpaced St. Martinville quarterback Markavon Williams, who led the Tigers to a 47-27 win over Lafayette High.
Amos rushed for 149 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries and completed two of four passes for 12 yards and a touchdown in the Panthers’ win. He also returned a kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown. Amos had 44.5 percent of the fan vote for the week.
Allen, stepping in for injured starter Mar’keyvrick Eddie, completed 13 of 17 passes for 244 yards and two touchdowns and had a 38-yard rushing TD in his first career start. He finished with 43.7 percent of the fan vote.
Williams, who rushed for 172 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries and completed three of five passes for 112 yards and a TD, had 11.8 percent of the fan vote.
On the defensive side, Catholic High School’s Christopher Landry had 14 tackles with an interception and shared in a sack for the Panthers. He netted 57.2 percent of the fan vote.
Westgate’s Alonzo Lewis had five tackles, including three tackles for loss, and received 41.5 percent of the fan vote.
Collyn Pontiff of Centerville was third in the voting with 1.3 percent of the fan vote. He had four tackles and 1 1/2 sacks in the Bulldogs’ 31-0 shutout of Ridgewood.
More than 1,900 votes were cast for the week. Some 2,200 votes were cast the opening week of the season.
Fans nominate players for the weekly honor by posting a comment to the story seeking nominations. Nominations are taken from Friday nights following the weekly prep games through midday Monday with the top nominees selected for the poll, which begins mid-afternoon each Monday and continues through early Thursday afternoon. The top vote getters each week are the Players of the Week and receive a certificate and T-shirt.
In order to nominate, one must sign in with their Facebook page. Only players for the 14 teams in The Daily Iberian’s coverage area are eligible.
