BATON ROUGE — The LSU Tigers are back in the top five.
After Saturday’s 36-16 beat down of then No. 2-ranked Georgia, LSU was expected to jump back up into the top 10 in the major college football polls — but how high was unknown. The victory was impressive enough to have voters in The Associated Press Top 25 Poll vault the Tigers from No. 13 all the way up to No. 5 which was the biggest jump of any team.
LSU (6-1, 3-1 SEC) is the highest ranked one-loss team in the country and is ranked below a foursome of undefeated teams in No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 Clemson and No. 4 Notre Dame.
LSU is the only team this season with three wins against Top 10 ranked opponents with having defeated then-No. 7 ranked Miami in opener (33-17), then-No. 8 ranked Auburn in week three (22-21) and now No. 2 Georgia on Saturday. In all three games, LSU was the underdog.
The SEC remains the top dog in the AP Poll with a total of seven teams ranked in the Top 25 with Alabama and LSU in the top five, followed by No. 8 Georgia, No. 11 Florida, No. 14 Kentucky, No. 17 Texas A&M, and No. 22 Mississippi State.
In the USA Today Amway Coaches Poll, which was also released on Sunday, LSU climbed from No. 12 to No. 5 as well, and just like the AP Poll, the Tigers are behind the same foursome of undefeated teams.
In the Coaches Poll, the SEC has six teams in the Top 25 with No. 1 Alabama, No. 5 LSU, No. 6 Georgia, No. 12 Florida, No. 17 Kentucky, No. 18 Texas A&M, while Mississippi State was in the Others Receiving Votes category.
No. 5 LSU returns to action this Saturday at Tiger Stadium when it welcomes SEC West foe No. 22 Mississippi State. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m.and televised on ESPN.
