NEW ORLEANS — Anthony Davis’ milestone will have to wait one more game.

Davis was six points shy of 10,000 for his seven-year career when coach Alvin Gentry took him out of the New Orleans Pelicans’ 140-126 rout of the San Antonio Spurs on Monday night in the Smoothie King Center.
Reserve forward Julius Randle told Gentry how close Davis was, but after Davis caught an elbow in the face with the Pelcians comfortably ahead Gentry pulled him midway through the fourth quarter.
Davis still had 29 points to lead four Pelicans with more than 20 points as New Orleans completed a sweep of a three-game home-stand on which they averaged 131 points. The Pelicans, who have won six of their last seven games, begin a three-game at road trip on Wednesday in Philadelphia.
Randle came off the bench to have a triple double with 21 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists in 25-plus minutes.
“I thought he played great just from the standpoint of being a facilitator,” Gentry said of Randle.
“He took advantage of matchups and showed a lot of poise.”

The Pelicans improved to 8-1 at home, the only loss coming against Utah when Davis wasn’t in the lineup.
Davis had scored 43 and 40 points in wins against New York and Denver to start the home-stand.
E’Twaun Moore added 24, Jrue Holiday scored 21, Nikola Mirotic had 13 and Frank Jackson came off the bench to score 12.
The Pelicans announced before the game that starting point guard Elfrid Payton is scheduled to undergo surgery Tuesday on the little figure on his left hand, which he injured against New York last Friday, and miss approximately six weeks.
New Orleans scored at least 30 points in every quarter, topping out with 40 in the third.
The Pelicans made 57.8 percent of their shots (59-of-102).
DeMar DeRozan scored 21, Bryn Forbes had 20, former Pelican Dante Cunningham scored 19, Rudy Gay 17 and former New Orleans Hornet Marci Belinelli and Jakob Poeltl came off the bench to score 11 each for the Spurs, who lost for the sixth time in eight games.
The Pelicans held forward LaMarcus Aldridge to seven points, 10 below his average, but he had 10 rebounds, one below his average.
New Orleans increased its one-point halftime lead by scoring the first eight points of the third quarter to extend the lead to 76-67 on a 3-pointer by Mirotic.
The Spurs closed within 83-82, but Davis had five points during an 18-7 run that extended New Orleans’ lead to 101-89.
The Pelicans led 108-97 lead after three quarters and Holiday scored seven points as they increased the lead to 119-103 and never looked back.
Gay and Forbes scored 11 points each as San Antonio raced to a 39-30 lead after the first quarter.
But New Orleans took a 68-67 halftime lead as Davis finished the half with 18 points, Randle had 15 and Moore 14.
“We started making shots,” Randle said of the second-quarter turnaround.
“On offense we like to push the pace and don’t ever want to slow down.
“It was their second game in two nights and we wanted to use that against them.”
