One huge change, a few minor ones and a few cosmetic changes were the result when the LHSAA released its first proposed plans for reclassification and redistricting for the 2019-20 and 2020-21 school years Thursday.

The big change is St. Martinville Senior High, after many years as a Class 4A school, was dropped to the Class 3A ranks for the next two years in football, basketball, baseball, softball and track.

Under the proposed change, the Tigers will be a part of a revamped District 5-3A that includes Abbeville, Crowley, Erath, Kaplan and David Thibodaux, which will play every sport except football.

That new proposed district breaks apart the Vermilion Parish/St. Mary Parish district that has been around for the past two reclassifications.

Another big change in district involves Westgate. 

In the last reclassification, the Tigers were part of a district that included St. Thomas More, Teurlings, Northside, Carencro and Rayne.

For the next two school years, the proposed District 5-4A will consist of Westgate, Beau Chene, Breaux Bridge, Carencro, Cecilia, Livonia and Opelousas High.

For the rest of the Teche Area, the proposed new districts just have some minor changes.

New Iberia Senior High remains in a largely-unchanged District 3-5A with Acadiana, Barbe, Comeaux, Sam Houston, Lafayette and Sulphur. LaGrange is set to drop down to Class 4A and Southside High in Youngsville officially joins the LHSAA and joins District 3-5A.

In Class 2A, District 7-2A also undergoes a minor change.

Catholic High, Delcambre, Franklin, Jeanerette, Loreauville and West St. Mary are still together in the district along with Ascension Episcopal, and Houma Christian moves up to Class 2A to join the district.

In Class A, District 7-A undergoes a couple of changes.

Lafayette Christian moved up to Class 2A and is out of the district. Centerville, Central Catholic, Hanson, Highland Baptist and Vermilion Catholic all remain but slated to join the district is Covenant Christian from Houma.

Finally in Class B, ESA’s new proposed district will consist of Bell City, Hathaway, JS Clark Leadership Academy from Opelousas, Lacassine and Midland. Joining the district will be all-girls school Academy of the Sacred Heart of Grand Coteau.

Schools have the opportunity to propose changes to the districts and a second new proposal for the next two years will be issued later. The final proposal will be voted on later this month.
