Iberia Parish Council District 5 Councilman Warren Gachassin has scheduled a town hall meeting tonight at Iberia Middle School on Weeks Island Road to discuss a proposal to add flap gates on the Commercial Canal to alleviate tidal flooding.
The meeting is open to the public.
The issue of the flap gates was brought up during the regular parish council meeting on Dec. 12. At the time, Iberia Parish President Larry Richard said he wanted to put the project up for funding through the GOMESA funding program.
GOMESA, established in 2006, is a revenue-sharing program for governments along the Gulf of Mexico’s energy coast for flood mitigation and infrastructure projects.
According to Richard, the project is expected to cost $180,000. He said he hopes to use this project as a trial run for receiving GOMESA grants in the future.
The town hall will begin at 6 p.m. in the Iberia Middle School cafeteria.
