Jackets jump out early to beat SMSH

ST. MARTINVILLE — New Iberia Senior High built a 23-point lead through three quarters and held on in the fourth to beat St. Martinville Senior High 48-35 in a non-district boys’ basketball game Friday.
The Yellow Jackets poured in six 3-point shots in the first three quarters, two each by Jake Lovette and Xavier Smith and one apiece by Stiles Jolivet and Jaquan Latula, in doubling up the Tigers 46-23 through three periods.
NISH led 14-10 after one quarter and outscored St. Martinville 17-6 in the second and 15-7 in the third. The Tigers rallied with a 12-2 edge in the fourth quarter.
Smith had 16 points to lead New Iberia. Lovette added 8 and Jolivet and Latula each had 5.
Davontre Alexander had 9 points, all after halftime, to lead SMSH. Jayvien Mallery had 8 points including a pair of 3-pointers and Jalen Mitchell and Datayvious Gabriel had 6 each, with Gabriel getting all his points on a pair of fourth-quarter 3-pointers for the Tigers.
Jeanerette 67, Catholic High 57
JEANERETTE — The Jeanerette High Tigers, fresh off a district-opening win over Loreauville Wednesday, made it two straight Friday with a win over Catholic High, which was playing its District 7-2A opener after having a district bye Wednesday.
Taylor Tallmore scored 17 of his game-high 25 points in the fourth quarter for Jeanerette, which erupted for 28 fourth-quarter points to blow open a close game. The Tigers, who have won three of their last four games, improved to 8-10 overall and 2-0 in district heading into Tuesday’s district game at Ascension Episcopal.
Dyvondrick Hurst added 16 points and Toddrick Paul chipped in 13 for the Tigers, who are tied with Franklin atop the district standings after two games.
Kolbe Chretien led CHS with 22 points while Trey Amos added 17 and Kaiden Burgess added 10 points.
Catholic High (10-9, 0-1) travels to West St. Mary Tuesday.
Girls
Catholic High 38, Jeanerette 30
JEANERETTE — Jeanerette’s Ashanti Jordan won the individual scoring contest with Catholic High’s Madison Bienvenu, but the Lady Panthers stayed unbeaten in District 7-2A with a win over the Lady Tigers Friday.
Jordan scored 25 of Jeanerette’s 30 points while Bienvenu scored 21 of CHS’s 38 points.
The Lady Panthers improved to 9-8 overall and 4-0 in district while Jeanerette fell to 3-8, 2-2.
Lauren Bonin added 8 points and Zy’Rien Green chipped in 6 for Catholic High, which travels to West St. Mary Tuesday.
Kailey Lively had the other 5 points for Jeanerette, which travels to Hanson Monday before getting back into District 7-2A play Tuesday at Ascension Episcopal.
Franklin 42, Loreauville 19
LOREAUVILLE — Franklin built a 20-11 lead at halftime and extended it to 33-17 after three quarters to win a District 7-2A girls’ game Friday.
Sta’Trail Butler had 11 points to lead the Lady Hornets. Autumn Jones and Irulan Toussaint had 10 each.
Individual statistics for Loreauville were not provided.
Franklin travels to Delcambre on Tuesday for another district game.
