Cake and drinks were distributed for the birthday celebrations of several Boys and Girls Club members.

The New Iberia Kiwanis Club teamed up with the Boys and Girls Club of New Iberia Wednesday to give a special gift for all the boys and girls who have had birthdays this quarter.

Bob DeRouen and Kenny Lejeune entered the Boys and Girls Club STEM room Wednesday afternoon with drinks and cake for the 30 or so boys and girls who had a birthday to celebrate.

“We have some special guests with the Kiwanis Club,” STEM coordinator Brianna Davis said at the start of the event event. “I want to y’all to listen and pay attention to what they say.”

The two came as part of the club’s annual birthday party for Boys and Girls Club kids. Apart from the pancake supper, drug prevention programs at local schools and the Children’s Parade, the Kiwanis Club also makes periodic efforts to help the Boys and Girls Club.

“Kiwanis has been around almost 100 years,” Lejeune said, speaking to the children. “Mr. Bob and I have been in the club for 20 plus years. Have any of you ever been to the Children’s Parade? Have any of you been to the pancake supper? How many of you at school have been to the Say No to Drugs program? That’s all the Kiwanis Club.”

With about 250 students being chaperoned by the Boys and Girls Club this summer, staff and volunteers have been hard at work on youth development for the 8- to 18-year-olds who take part in the program.

Cake and drinks were doled out to the children during the party, and a few games were played for the children as well.

Along with the party, the Kiwanis Club will be returning to the facility on Center Street today as the group puts on its annual Quiz Bowl at the Boys and Girls Club.

“The Kiwanis Club is a group of men and women volunteering to raise money to give back to you guys through the parade, scholarships, birthday parties and the quiz bowl tomorrow,” Lejeune said.

“Today is the annual birthday party we give to you guys, and we do it because we appreciate the help and thank y’all.”

The two answered questions from the curious children about Kiwanis and what the club does for the city.

The Quiz Bowl, which is in its eighth year, will be held in the Boys and Girls Club gymnasium today. The bowl is meant to create a day filled with laughter, education and memories for the children who participate.
