- Louisiana Division of Historic Preservation CAMP scheduled in New Iberia in June
The Louisiana Division of Historic Preservation will hold a Commission Assistance and Mentoring Program Friday, June 14, at the Sliman Theater in New Iberia.
The CAMP is one of two scheduled in June the first being Saturday, June 8, in Winnsboro.
The program is the signaturing training offered by the National Alliance of Preservation Commissions, according to a statement from the Iberia Parish Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Training is conducted by qualified preservation professionsals and the CAMP is an opportunity for local historic district commissioners and anyone interested in historic preservation. Iberia Travel will provide services and collateral to the LA Main Street Managers Association for the event.
CAMP will be from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Registration is $15 and includes a box lunch. Register by mailing a check payble to Louisiana Main Street Managers Association, C/O Ray Scriber, P.O. Box 44247, Baton Rouge, LA 70804.
The agenda includes several items, including:
- Why Preserve: A preservation overview and look at the role of the local commission in historic preservation.
- Community Engagement & Building Public Support: The session is designed to help participants communicate effectively with a variety of audiences, build support for designations, defend sometimes unpopular decisions and deal with reluctant elected officials.Workshop leades also offer creative suggestoins for promoting historic preservation in the community, according to the statement.
- Design Review: Working in small groups, participants will practice design review with a simplified application and set of design guidelines. Participants will determine what questions they would want to ask of the applicant and explore a potential motion. The session is appropriate for seasoned professions and new commissioners.
- Meeting Procedures: Participants learn to work within the legal framework of state law and local statutes and how to establish clear rules of procedure to ensure a defensible decision-making process.
