The event was held to help St. Martinvile children kick off the school year with a fresh fade and even some school supplies for those that were interested.

A steady of crowd of people could be seen at the barber shop on Main Street throughout the day as a tent was put up by the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, who have been putting on similar events in St. Martinville for 16 years.

The free haircuts were available for children ages 5 to 13. Those attending were also abiding by COVID-19 mandates of social distancing and mask wearing.

Owner of the shop Jason Willis said more than 90 heads were cut by the end of the day as part of the effort to help students start the school year on a positive note.

“We were busy all day,” Willis said.

Other activities like voter registration and COVID-19 information were also available, allowing the event to serve multiple purposes for the community.
