Local children Shop With A Cop

Members of the New Iberia Police Department teamed up with eight children at Wal-Mart on Admiral Doyle Drive Thursday morning to shop for whatever they wanted thanks to the department’s “Shop With A Cop” program.

Capt. Leland Laseter with the NIPD said the initiative, which is in its second year, with a coordinated effort with the department, the Iberia Parish School Board and Wal-Mart to provide for needy children in New Iberia.

“This year we also incorporated some of the families affected by the recent tornado,” Laseter said.

Schools raised funds through a jean day initiative, and Laseter said an officer made a cash donation to provide for the effort. Each of the eight children selected teamed up with an NIPD officer who helped them with a morning of shopping.

After the event, Laseter said the children were provided lunch thanks to Chick-Fil-A as well.
