- Parade-goers distribute beads and other throws as part of the St. Patrick's Day celebration.
A celebration of all things Irish took place in New Iberia Sunday as Fir Máirseáil Nua Iberia’s annual St. Patrick’s Day parade made its way through Main Street.
Despite some initial rainy weather, New Iberia’s only Irish organization happily performed its duty to celebrate the annual holiday by donning green attire, green beads and marching through downtown.
Bagpipers led the procession as it kicked off at 2 p.m., followed by a banner declaring the name of Fir Máirseáil Nua Iberia, which translates to New Iberia Marching Men. The organization annually puts on a St. Patrick’s Day celebration that starts near New Iberia City Hall and ends up at Bourbon Hall where the party continues.
As part of the traditional St. Patrick’s Day festivities, Fir Máirseáil Nua Iberia also annually turns the fountain in front of the New Iberia Civic Center green as a nod to the St. Patrick’s Day holiday.
The organization performed that task earlier this month, and the fountain will continue the festive color until after the holiday has passed.
St. Patrick’s Day takes place this coming Friday.
