Landry’s lights invited to ABC’s Christmas Lights Fights

David Landry has hosted his Redneck Christmas for years, putting out over 200,000 Christmas lights for families to enjoy, and he’s back with another show at 20415 Highway 90 Frontage Rd.

Landry uses both RGB and LED lights in the show. RGBs can be sequenced by group, whereas LEDs had to be sequenced individually. It took Landry more than a year to sequence each song with the lights. Every time he needs to add or remove a prop, he has to resequence that entire set of lights. Once the lights are sequenced, however, he doesn’t have to mess with the programming.

“People think it’s plug and play. I’m here to tell you, it is not,” Landry said.

The lights fill the yard with depictions of Christmas trees, candy canes, a happy holidays sign and much more. The lights flash and dance in sync with various popular holiday tracks. He also has a decorated and lit “Santa-Mobile” driven by Christopher Granger, who plays a rather convincing Santa Claus.

Each piece in his yard was hand-built and is laid out each year by Landry. He can’t rely on other people to set up the lights each year because he has an intimate understanding of how the lights are sequenced and need to be wired.

Because he built the entire system himself, he was able to remove redundancies and streamline the lights as much as possible. This year, he plans to add new speakers to enhance the show further.

Landry used to host the lightshow annually, but when the COVID-19 pandemic rocked the nation and forced everyone home, Landry decided to instead host the event every other year. Each year he hosts the lights, Landry dedicates his fall season to setting up lights. He starts Oct. 1, and usually finishes right before Thanksgiving.

“Well you certainly have to like it to put in the time because it’s a lot of work!” Landry said.

This year, Landry received an invitation from ABC’s Christmas Lights Fights to participate in their show, and plans to submit a video entry soon.
