Nun-based tomfoolery is back with Iberia Performing Art League’s “Nunsense 2” for two weekends of comedy at the Essanee Theater.

The show started Thursday, Dec. 7 with a family-day dress rehearsal, and for the first weekend, the performance starts at 7:30 p.m. and runs Dec. 8, 9 and 10, and then continues Thursday, Dec. 14 to 17 for the final weekend.

The first play was a satirical comedy about a group of nuns that put on a show to raise money to pay funeral costs for the rest of their convent, who were inadvertently killed by the cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, played by Barbie Delhomme.

“Nunsense 2” follows those same nuns as they put on a show to thank the audience for coming to the first show. The show features cast members of all ages and backgrounds, including teachers, nurses, lawyers and retired folks from ages 20 to 80.

The comedy musical involves singing and dancing with plenty of audience interaction, according to Charlie Robertson, former president, currently playing Father Virgil.

Audiences of any age can appreciate the show, but Robertson said those of the Catholic faith may get a particular kick out of it.

Because the cast is carried over from the first Nunsense, preparing for the show was quite easy, according to director Kathrine Caffrey.

“Everybody knows exactly what they’re doing. They have to learn different lines and different songs of course, but they already have their personalities and characters established,” Caffrey said.

The biggest addition to the show, according to Caffrey, is sister Julia, Child of God, who accidently killed the original nuns, but was never revealed in the first show.
