The City of New Iberia is partnering with Marlon Moore to host a working-class focused career fair Wednesday, March 6 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the MLK Recreation Center on the West End Circle.
Starting at 8 a.m., interviewers will assist applicants with resume prep, and starting at 10 a.m. the job fair will begin.
Several organizations will be involved in the event, including Acadiana Workforce Solutions, Louisiana Workforce Commission and Job Corps.
Many government organizations will be hiring at the event, including the St. Mary School Board, the New Iberia City and Parish Governments, the Jeanerette City Government and the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development. A variety of local businesses are also getting involved, including Cypress Bayou Casino and Iberia Medical Center.
Marlon Moore, coordinator of the Iberia Parish and St. Martin Parish Job Centers initially had the idea of hosting a career fair to put the average person to work. According to Moore, the event has exceeded expectations. Currently, Moore has reached capacity in the MLK Recreation Center with a total of 35 organizations, 28 companies, and 7 resource tables.
“Now I’m at the point where I have to say no, which is certainly not what I want to do,” Moore said.
To advertise the event, Moore uses a communications team that shares information across various media platforms, while Moore has passed flyers around to various community-based companies that working-class and underprivileged citizens may visit like the SMILE Action Agency.
Moore aims to provide employment from companies in and around Iberia Parish and especially in New Iberia so that individuals who don’t have steady access to a car could still attend through alternative means of transportation.
Interested businesses can no longer sign up to attend the event, but Moore wants to hold more events in the future. The event is free to attend, and several businesses will be conducting interviews on the spot, so Moore recommends attendees “dress for success.”
