Dice game ambush leads to multiple injuries in New Iberia

- A search by the New Iberia Police Department recovered four pounds of suspected marijuana and a firearm.
An ambush on Breaux Alley Monday night left multiple people on both sides of the shootout injured.
According to the New Iberia Police Department, an illegal gambling operation drew fire from multiple attackers just before 9 p.m. on Monday. An officer patrolling the area heard gunshots and began to investigate, discovering five individuals with injuries ranging from minor to severe in the 600 block of Breaux Alley.
The victims were treated by NIPD officers and Acadian Ambulance while on scene before being transported to area hospitals.
A preliminary investigation by the CID detectives has determined that several individuals were engaged in illegal gambling and narcotics distribution when an armed group of individuals approached the residence and began opening fire. At least one of the individuals from the residence returned fire at the ambushers., striking at least one.
A search warrant was executed on the property, where four pounds of suspected marijuana and a firearm was located. According to Chief of Police Todd D’Albor, detectives are working to piece together the facts of the case and identify all individuals involved. Arrest warrants will be issued soon.
